Now, how many schools in the Bronx boast that they sell fresh farm produce for fund raising purposes? Every fall, the club sets up a stand by the flagpole, and offers fresh produce from the garden to teachers and students on their way home. We don't have a set fee for our products, but request donations for every purchase. We usually have a good supply of tomatoes, squash, peppers, and herbs. Each year, we make about $400, and we use the money to pay for our camping trips |
This is a highly unique event that never
ceases to surprise. This sale involves dozens of volunteers, as customers
often request their goods as fresh as can be. Our biggest seller is basil.
Students have to run back and forth between the table and the garden to
pick bunches of basil. We also have had considerable success selling other
herbs such as dill, rosemary, lemon balm, and oregano. We also have dried
these herbs in the past, and sell them in small bags. In addition, we
have always done well with our tomatoes, as in late September our plants
are at their peak. As the plants will soon be dying back, we also pick
our green tomatoes, and have no trouble selling them as well. Probably
most interesting about this event is that we sell freshly picked flowers.
Customers ask if we have a particular kind of flower for sale, and we
can usually meet the requests with no problem. |
