Our Day At Hawthorne Valley Farm

On Friday July 27, the students in the JFK High School Uplinc Garden Program were invited to spend the day at the farm.  It was a great day filled with interesting sights and learning experiences for everyone.

A tour of the farm was provided by Rachel, the main farmer of the Hawthorne Valley complex.  We helped in picking green beans which later turned into a competition between the boys and girls over who could pick the most beans, which the girls claim they won.

After this, we proceeded with eating a delicious all organic lunch provided by Rachel, which included lightly salted potato chips, tuna sandwiches, peaches, home-made pasta, grapes, and pizza with vegetable toppings. We also got a tour of their dairy operation where they process cheese and yogurt and watched the cows return in a long row, one after the other, an unforgettable sight that we had the privilege to see.

The students who went along on the trip included the president of the Environmental Club, Omer Ilyas, the 2001 Uplinc Staff (Franklyn Roa, Frenia Roa, Brenda Puello, Mohammed Mossobir, Marisol Cardenas, Lana Kempton, Simeon Kazmetski, and Fahaam Razaek). Mr. Thoman, our supervisor, had this to say about the trip, “We had a great time and I eagerly anticipate taking students up there again and providing them with an even more inclusive experience on the farm.  I would like to give the students the chance to stay overnight and to experience more aspects of life on the farm.”

Our students had a lot to say about the experience. “I liked petting the cows and the farm dog. The people there were very friendly”, said Marisol while Fahaam humorously stated “It was very educational but I accidentally rang the outdoor school bell.” All in all, it was a fun but highly educational Friday for all of us.
