Ms. Saltzman, Kennedy art teacher, had students in her ceramics class make moldings of animal and bird faces. The animals selected: crows, raccoons, squirrels, and rats are all representative of our area. The molds were then glazed to help protect them from the elements. After the molds were made, they could be slid down a large plastic pvc pipe that held them in place. Extra cement applied to the pole insured that the masks stayed in place. The pole was installed near the newly finished pond in the late summer of 1999, and it certainly demonstrated a happy marriage of art and nature. The pole was a huge conversation piece. Unfortunately, the totempole did not brave the elements well, and by the spring of 2000, some of the ceramic pieces had either cracked or were broken. We had to take the pole down, but enjoyed it while it lasted!
