Purple Hyssop

BY: EDWIN SANCHEZ, "THE ENVIRONMENTALIST"

I chose to do a web page on a plant found throughout our garden. I have selected it because I find it to be very different from other plants we grow. The appearance of the plant greatly stands out. It is a bright purple color that expresses a sense of peacefulness. Adding to it’s attractive color is it’s smell of mint, which instantly gets you hooked. This particular plant is very pervasive within the garden, and we sometimes have to remove it because it takes over space belonging to other plants. The Purple Hyssop is very easy to grow. It doesn’t need much rain in order to flourish. The Purple Hyssop is a great addition to any garden as long as you stay on top of it and keep it from taking over.

Purple Hyssop is a great attractor of wildlife. Its bright colors and smells catch the immediate attention of animals which may be in its surroundings such as this milky white butterfly you in the picture. Other insects which may be attracted are bees and wasps. On a hot summer day, swarms of bees can be seen buzzing around the flowers.

Purple Hyssop is a native of Egypt, Greece, Crete and Asia Minor and was cultivated by the ancient Egyptians. Purple Hyssop Latin name is Agastache scrophulariifolia. I personally enjoy Purple Hyssop because of it’s unique smell it has a smell which instantly grabs ones attention. Purple Hyssop grows in great amounts which make it very popular in the garden it is pretty much everywhere. Purple Hyssop greatly benefits mankind in many different ways such as soups, medical, and in making liqueur and in various other ways.

Purple Hyssop is greatly known for it’s medicinal benefits. It is valued when it comes to coughs and pectoral affections and especially with dry coughs, where expectoration is difficult. The seeds have often known to be smoked in order to promote expectoration. Few realize how much value Purple Hyssop can have.
Being apart of this garden has brought me to understand many of the plants and get to know them very well. Plants are an essential part of life all kinds of different plants are used for different things which even more stresses their importance. Purple Hyssop helps the environment and also has many beneficial factors for humans.

Hyssop always sells at our annual farmstands
