Bridge Building

Our biggest accomplishment this year was the construction of a bridge spanning our wetlands. Thanks to the leadership and expertise of our school shop teacher, Mr. Paul Witmer, we were able to construct a truly durable bridge with little hassle. Spanning about twenty five feet, this bridge rests on railroad ties, and has railings on both sides.

This project provided the wood shop program in our school a unique opportunity, and again demonstrated how a school garden can apply to all different subject areas. Mr. Witmer's students worked on measurements, design, and other carpentry skills in the construction of this bridge.

The bridge was built first in our seventh floor woodshop room in pieces. When ready, the pieces were brought down to our school auto shop on the first floor. During the Christmas holidays, we worked in the chill of the autoshop, piecing the bridge together. Finally, we painted it with a nice fire engine red. As you can see here, getting it out of the shop and over to the garden was no small feat. We slid it on roll carts, and then had to remove some of the garden fence to get inside the garden.
