Anastasia Bakoulis, President |
If there was ever any year where we might have let our dreams get ahead of us, this probably was it! Ever since the garden was first created, students discussed the idea of building a pond. Mr. Thoman never took such an idea seriously, as it looked like such an undertaking was beyond the scope of what the group could take on. Sure 'nuff, by the summer of 1999, a hole was being dug with the idea that a pond would fill that void shortly. By the end of the summer, a beautiful body of water was in that spot, and no one could believe that we all were able to really pull something off like that! Aside from the construction of a pond, the club was still on overdrive. Mr. Carlin and Mr. Thoman started teaching Horticulture as a PM school offering, with Mr. Carlin providing the science perspective, and Mr. Thoman providing a landscape art and social science angle. Students in the class were also expected to do some work in the garden, and take ownership over one section and make plans for, and nurture it up through June. Anastasia served as President during this robust year in the club's history. Highly involved in all facets of the organization, she set a good example for other students, and was instrumental in making the organization a powerhouse that rivaled the championship football team as a glorified Kennedy institution. This was also the year that all cabinet members got accepted to Ivy league schools: Columbia, Dartmouth, Cornell, and Barnard, demonstrating that involvement with the Enchanted Garden must have added some degree of luster to the high school resume! Special recognition this year also goes to Joyes Baby, Evagelia Bakoulis, Ivan Cedeno, Nara Chhua, Salid Garcia, Joseph Gonzalez, Dominique Guadelupe, Jose Jimenez, Rayal Johnson, Liza Kempton, Sara Kempton, Fakhar and Hifza Khan, Elizabeth Kim, Elaine Langer, Luis Lopez, Osvaldo Montas, Elizabeth Osewalt, Yashira Pepin, Marina Ryabsteva, Kim Sales, James Underdue, Engels Valenzuela, Lanes Venus, and Luda Vinnick. |

David Graves, beekeeper from Berkshire Berries of Massachussets shows students how he keeps honeybees near our garden. This segment was on the news that night. Read the news story on his visit. |

View an extended article from the Riverdale Press, which chronicles the summer of 1998 in the garden. (This is by far the best piece ever written on the garden, but takes up three web pages, and each page may take about a minute to download, as these pages are from scans.)
