Evagelia Bakoulis, President |
With the new Greenhouse in place, our club had a new asset and even more responsibilities. Thanks to another grant from the Hudson River Foundation, we were able to begin the construction of a greenhouse, and purchase a computer as well. The whole idea of our computer purchase was to begin building web sites in our office. With our greenhouse, we now could transfer many of our seedlings from our growlabs to the outdoors much sooner. We also now had a centralized place to put all our tools. No more trying to get inside the school on a Saturday, and having to find a way to dig a hole without a shovel. For this year, we had the enthusiastic and persistant leadership of Evagelia Bakoulis, who did much to get our club on to the net, and foster better communication throughout the school. We also received enormous help from the following students this year: Jose Arias, Hansel Baez, Derrick Bent, Marysol Cardenas, Pierre Coello, Cristina David, Michael Delgado, Mahammood Elahi, Diomarys Escano, Salid Garcia, Latoya Graham, Omer Ilyas, Simeon Kazmetski, Lana Kempton, Sam Magnus, Alex Marte, Yashira Pepin, Christian Principe, Fahaam Razack, Franklyn Roa, Abdus Salaam, Karina Sosa, Kashmir Supersad, and Josh Vazquez, to name some of the many students that lent a helping hand in making the garden more beautiful than ever.

We finished constructing our greenhouse the summer before, but didn't get to put it to use until this spring. Here is Omer and Fahaam setting up the plant shelf. |

The spring of 2001, the Haldane School from Cold Spring, New York came down to visit our garden.Students from the two schools exchanged thoughts and ideas in our garden. Cold Spring is a town about 50 miles north of the Bronx, but also located right within sight of the Hudson River. It is hoped in future years, we can exchange ideas, and explore environmental issues in a collaborative manner. Kennedy students had the opportunity to ask questions about life in a relatively rural upstate town. They visited Mr. Altshuler's English class, and students asked them about the issues of race, violence, teachers, and teenage life in Cold Spring. On the other hand, Haldane students got a chance to ride Kennedy escalators between periods, and visit some classes on a hot May day. Before leaving, the students planted rosemary and basil in our herb beds. Here is a link if you want to learn more about the Haldane School District |
