The Gateway Program

On one hot July day, Biology teacher Ms. Ruiz introduced a summer Gateway class(or at the Kennedy level - KISS: Kennedy in Science and Society) to the garden. These students were learning how to make maps, using our garden as the focus of their newly acquired cartographic skills.

Students in the Gateway program have traditionally been the biggest contributors to our gardening program. With the exception of Omer Ilyas, all of our Presidents have come from Gateway: Tomasina Harper, Marcos Santiago, Anastasia and Evagelia Bakoulis, and Elaine Langer. This unique program attracts highly motivated students to Kennedy High School, and it is consistently this cohort of students that has taken a vested interest in making the garden a viable and integral part of the educational program at Kennedy.
