Edwin Sanchez,
President

A big round of applause to Edwin, who kept the club afloat in a time or turmoil and uncertainty. With Kennedy High School being broken up into smaller schools, a new school reaching completion next door to the garden, and the absence of Mr. Thoman (on paternity leave), the garden managed to remain unscathed ... an island of calm.

We had some great turnouts for some of our after school and weekend work days. We planted a host of new bushes near the kiosk, making our valley all the more lush. We also lost some trees to some kind of fungus ... our pin oaks and black birch have suffered the most.

Again, we have had a wet spring, and there has been little need to water. Let's hope it stays that way through the summer, as access to hydrant water is still an issue.

Membership is at an all-time low. Perhaps it is largely due to a lack of adult leadership with the club. Maybe it's because of the all the changes going on at Kennedy. Who knows, but with our tenth anniversary coming up, let's hope there is a renewed interest in the garden in the coming year, and it once again serves as a focal point for Kennedy and the other new schools emerging in it's midst. Let's hope that with all the new sunshine coming back into the garden with the construction fence down, there will also be a renewed interest in tending to this special green space in the shadow of Kennedy.
